A Thousand Splendid Suns

The two times in the book in which Mariam needs to sign a contract are during her marriage and before her execution. Discuss how these two events mirror each other and what the symbolize.

In the novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini, the author creates two events were the protagonist signs documents to symbolize that one motion can change your life. The first time that Mariam signs a contract is when she is about to get married to Rasheed. It was symbolizing that she was signing away her life. The contract was curse that gave her a miserable life. She suffered under his rule day in and day out. In the very end after she has killed Rasheed, Mariam is sentenced to death upon this she signs another contract. This contract though it is to end her life on Earth. It symbolizes that Mariam is being let set free. The events mirror each other as one show the hardship that Maraiam had to endure while the other displays the happiness that she will be granted after much suffering in real life.
